Cornelius Ryan masterfully recounts the story of D-Day, the battle that Ryan and others say marked the beginning of the end of WWII. The story starts with the preparations that were made for the invasion and details the hard decision Eisenhower had to make concerning the day of the operation. It follows the paratroopers as they landed behind enemy lines during the first hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944. Next, Ryan tells of the Allies armada of ships that supported the operation and of the men who invaded and died on the beaches of Normandy.

The Longest Day was the most captivating WWII book I have ever read. It was very realistic and made this nonfiction history book read as well as any other novel I have ever read. The success and the mishaps that occurred during D-Day are excellently detailed in The Longest Day. I especially liked the way Ryan interspersed personal accounts of soldiers and citizens who were there. Also, the way he switched from event to event including the telling of the same event from the Allies and German point of view was wonderfully done.
