Hunter Scott, a young boy, created his history fair project on the torpedoing and subsequent sinking of the USS Indianapolis. The sinking killed many of the crew and left others to die during shark attacks and other misfortunes that the crew encountered in the water, waiting to be rescued. He starts a quest with the project to fix the damage done to the name of the captain of the ship, which will bring him all the way to Congress. The captain, Captain McVay, was inaccurately court-martialed and said to be at fault for not preventing the torpedoing. In actuality, Captain McVay was innocent and people in the Navy were the ones to blame.

Pete Nelson describes the sinking in very simple terms that young children would find easy to read. However, some of the descriptions of the court-martialing were long and dry. After Nelson recounts the gory days that the men of the USS Indianapolis spent in the shark-infested waters of the South Pacific, he goes on to tell about the work that Hunter Scott did to fix injustice that was brought upon Captain McVay. The reading level of "Left for Dead" was simple enough for children, but some parts might have been too graphic for them. I found the book as a whole very interesting and factual, but a little slow due to the long descriptions.
