Following up where the first book in the Bartimaeus Trilogy left of, Nathaniel has been promoted to a high government position. He has been assigned to stop the Resistance, a group of non-magicians who are performing fast strikes on magicians. He soon learns that this job is not as easy as he assumed it would be, and he once again summons the ever-witty Bartimaeus. On the other side, the reader follows Kitty, a member of the Resistance who had previously stolen from Nathaniel. She helps carry out the small raids, but only until the leader of the Resistance finds an opportunity that could possible once and for all throw the magicians out of power. Also, an overpowering, mysterious, mass is terrorizing London that is not related to the Resistance. The book comes to a climax after Nathaniel comes back from his trip to Prague to uncover the mystery of the unexplained thing that has wrecked numerous priceless items. Nathaniel returns to find the city in uproar that only continues to get worse.

The plot was exciting, unpredictable, and funny. The book takes a different approach to magic, where the magicians summon demons that carry out the spells. I did not want the book to end; every page of this almost 600-page book was thrilling. Bartimaeus was even funnier and wittier that in the first book, which added the element of humor, something sometimes books desperately lack. The book went into great detail without sacrificing any action, especially in Bartimaeus' footnotes. I cannot wait to find out what adventure the last book in the trilogy holds.
