In this short, story, there is a very important message that if the book is read just as a story is lost. The story is based on a traditional tale that is told in Mexico and John Steinbeck made it into a book. It is about young pearl harvester in Mexico named Kino. He finds The Pearl of the World, an enormous and extremely valuable pearl. He at first thinks of the simple things that it could get him, marriage, or new cloths. Later, the riches the pearl could bring him go to his head and he wants what in his society seem above them, such as a rifle. He becomes greedy and only wants the best price for the pearl. Among the many messages that can be gotten from this book is that riches are only material and cannot improve relationships or even life in general. I loved this book for its simplicity and the way it still got such an important message across. Besides the shortness teenagers, not by younger children, should read the book.
