The central conflict in Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry is that there is a ruling class that controls the society. The ruling class tells the people many things such as, where to live, how to live, what jobs to do, and who dies and when they die. They do this by keeping people afraid and uneducated, only teaching the boys to read and to write. Consequently, the people are rude and mean to each other. The main character Kira, a weaver, has been chosen by the ruling class to shape the future of this society by weaving on the famous singerﾒs Robe. The Robe tells of the past, how their society was many times very advanced but each time it was destroyed. There is a section on the Robe that is blank and that is what Kira must fill in. Kira, however, learns the secrets to how the ruling class controls the people and realizes she must change the future of this dictated place. Another great book like The Giver by Lois Lowery.
